A man in India was rushed into surgery after doctors discovered practically an entire utensil drawer’s worth of things in his stomach — and a knife, which was starting to puncture his insides. Karan Sen, 35, had swallowed everything from two screwdrivers and two toothbrushes to eight spoons and a kitchen knife. Sen is believed to possess a psychiatric disorder which compels an individual to eat non-edible items. The disorder, Pica, more commonly involves ingesting things like hair, dirt, and paint chips, though doctors didn’t say whether the person had been officially diagnosed. “It took nearly four hours for the team of surgeons to work upon Karan,“ says Dr. Rajneesh Pathania, of Lal Bhadur Shastri Medical College. “He is out of danger now.”

Sen arrived to the hospital in serious pain, but seemed to be unaware of the things in his stomach. X-rays showed the spoons and therefore the knife, which they said was “protruding from inside his stomach.”

“It took nearly four hours for the team of surgeons to operate upon Karan ,“ said Medical College principal Dr Rajneesh Pathania.

“He is out of danger now. This was a first of its kind surgery in the college. The team removed eight spoons, two screwdrivers, two toothbrushes, a kitchen knife and a door latch from the stomach of the man,” he added.

It took a three hour operation to remove all of the items from his stomach. Sen is now in the care of his family as he recovers. People with the disorder typically eat inedible items such as hair, nails, plastic etc.

Surgeons immediately began the operation “without wasting any time but discovered more objects inside,” including an ingot and a latch. Sen is in recovery now and within the care of his family.

The gruesome discovery wasn’t the primary time dangerous objects had to be surgically removed. In 2017, doctors removed 100 pieces of metal from a man’s stomach, including knives, nails and screws.

The 52-year-old man had a sort of chronic psychosis, which resulted during a tendency to swallow metal objects
